Nigeria’s prime Fintech firm, Flutterwave has been announced as a ‘Pioneer’ on TIME’s list of influential companies in the world, with the outlet reporting that the firm’s effort in recharging retailers after the pandemic slowed travel in Nigeria was instrumental in the choice.
Divided into 5 categories; Pioneers, Leaders, Innovators, Disruptors, and Titans, Flutterwave joins an illustrious list that includes the likes of Apple, Twitter, and Stripe, making history as the only African company to make it in the Pioneer category this year.
The firm’s Co-founder and CEO, Olugbenga Agboola, explained that the digital payment provider launched a free promotion called “keeping the lights on” which helped to throw in a lifeline for businesses in Africa when the pandemic lockdown hit the continent as the digital-payment processor was able to rapidly set up digital storefronts for 20,000 customers.
This recognition is the latest in a feat of recent achievements, one of which has seen Flutterwave hit tech-unicorn status in March when it secured $170 million in Series C funding from global investors, thereby putting the valuation of the company at more than $1 billion.
TIME’s nomination for the list was gathered from its global network of editors and correspondents, as well as industry experts, and other areas which were considered include the health care, entertainment, transportation, and tech industry.
